Biliary bypass surgery
What is biliary bypass surgery?
It’s a surgery done to help relieve symptoms caused by a blocked bile duct, which may be caused by cancer or other conditions, such as infection, scar tissue or gallstones. During this operation, the doctor will connect the bile duct to a piece of the small intestine.
Results
This surgery will create a new pathway around the blockage to allow the bile to flow to the intestine for normal digestion of fats. It does not cure the cancer, but it can relieve jaundice (a yellowish staining of the skin and whites of the eyes that is caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood) and other symptoms. It may precede other types of treatment.
