Gastrointestinal health

Expert care in treating digestive issues

Women are unique when it comes to gastrointestinal (GI) health. Some digestive problems are more common in women, and some affect women differently than men. There are also life events exclusive to women that may cause GI issues, such as menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.

Addressing the specific needs of women

At the Gastrointestinal Health Center for Women, your digestive health is our specialty. We use state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques to diagnose and treat women with a wide range of GI conditions, as well as screen for GI cancers.

Treatment options

Many GI conditions can be managed with simple lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and weight management. However, other digestive problems may be more serious and require medication or surgery.

Our board-certified gastroenterologists collaborate with specialists in the areas of urogynecology, colorectal surgery, gynecology, nutrition, psychiatry and primary care to provide a multidisciplinary approach to GI health.

We treat a variety of issues, including:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Liver disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Constipation

Specialized services

Medical nutrition therapy: Our registered dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy to help patients manage common GI issues such as diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and incontinence. Medical nutrition therapy has been shown to alleviate GI symptoms associated with IBS, IBD, fatty liver and GERD.

Behavioral medicine therapy: Behavioral health issues such as stress and anxiety are closely associated with GI conditions. They may contribute to GI symptoms or be caused by existing problems. Our clinical psychologist can work with you to address the emotional issues related to your GI condition in an individual or small group setting.

We don’t just treat existing conditions—we also take a proactive approach to keeping you and your family healthy. We offer individual and group nutrition counseling specific to women and girls of all ages, from diabetes management to weight loss.
