What are neurodegenerative diseases?

Neurodegenerative diseases increasingly impact numerous bodily functions over time such as balance, movement, speech, respiration and the cardiac system. Neurodegenerative diseases include:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Friedreich's ataxia
  • Huntington's disease
  • Lewy body disease
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Spinal muscular atrophy

Causes

Though many of the diseases are genetic in origin, a variety of medical and/or environmental conditions may spur the onset, including:

  • Alcoholism
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Toxins
  • Chemicals
  • Viruses

In many cases, the cause is unknown.
