Being a chief nursing officer requires handling many responsibilities. On any given day, these medical professionals may oversee the adoption of new treatments, shape nursing policies, and mediate conversations between a hospital’s CEO and its nursing staff. They must be adept communicators with confidence and leadership skills.
In a recent interview for Northwell Connections: Glen Cove Hospital, Theresa Anne Dillman, RN, chief nursing officer at Glen Cove Hospital, discussed her passion for helping people, nursing professional development and life outside of the hospital.
I went into health care because I believe in the power of compassion, empathy and healing. I became a nurse so that I could make a difference in the lives of others and be a source of comfort and support during times of uncertainty — I’ve always wanted to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves and to be a voice for the voiceless. I enjoy the challenges and rewards of nursing because they push me to constantly grow, learn, develop others and aim for excellence.
Nursing is not just a job for me — it is a calling and a passion that drives me to be the best version of myself for the benefit of others.
As chief nursing officer, I love having the opportunity to lead and inspire a team of health care professionals who are committed to providing exceptional care to our patients. I am passionate about creating a positive and supportive work environment that encourages collaboration, innovation and professional growth. I take pride in advocating for our nurses and empowering them to deliver the highest quality of care. As a leader, I know that our people are our number one priority.
One of the challenges that I am constantly trying to solve for is making sure our nursing staff have the resources, support and training they need to succeed as technology evolves. One way I do that is by offering ongoing education and nursing professional development opportunities. I am also focused on improving patient outcomes and satisfaction by implementing evidence-based practices, streamlining processes and improving collaboration.
I love to learn and teach. I also enjoy the outdoors, hiking, water activities like kayaking, jet skiing and boating, and just being surrounded by nature. I frequently play board games with my friends and family.
Spending time with my family is my favorite activity. They are the air I breathe and the people who bring me true joy.
