Five Northwell Health hospitals earned top 50 national rankings in 28 adult medical specialties — eight of them top 20 specialties — according to US News & World Report’s 2022-23 Best Hospital rankings. They are led by the obstetrics and gynecology program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, part of Katz Women’s Hospital, which placed seventh in the nation.

Three Northwell hospitals are considered regional powerhouses — Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish — each rate among the top seven hospitals in the New York metropolitan area and the entire state, based on US News’ analysis of nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide.

“I know just how tremendous our workforce is because I see it every day, so it’s wonderful to recognize that care, effort and expertise reflected in the latest US News Best Hospital rankings,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell’s president and CEO. “Northwell Health has faced herculean challenges over these last two pandemic years — and we’ve become stronger for it. We’ve taken those lessons to heart and are moving ahead to create an even better patient experience with an ever more connected continuum of care with the communities that we serve.”

Lenox Hill achieved top 50 status in nine specialties:

North Shore University Hospital was Long Island’s highest-ranked hospital, earning national rankings in all 11 of its specialty programs:

Long Island Jewish Medical Center was nationally ranked in six specialties:

Huntington Hospital, a community hospital, ranked 45th nationally in pulmonology and lung surgery. Glen Cove Hospital saw its rehabilitation program ranked 47th.

“Amazing things happen at Northwell hospitals, something that I can attest to from my time as executive director at Lenox Hill Hospital,” said Jill Kalman, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer. “The US News & World Report rankings point to the many top-flight specialty programs throughout the health system. I’m proud not only of the collective work put in to make those high-performing programs with great outcomes possible, but of the year-over-year rise in the preeminence of our hospitals and their passionate professionals.”

US News conducts a separate analysis of the nation’s best children’s hospitals. In the latest survey results released on June 14, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park ranked No. 1 on Long Island and earned top 40 national rankings for exceptional care in nine pediatric specialties. The largest provider of pediatric health services in New York State, Cohen Children’s has been ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals by US News for 16 consecutive years.

This marks the 33rd edition of US News’ Best Hospitals rankings. Its methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. US News evaluated nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties, and more than 20 procedures and conditions to compile its 2022-23 rankings. Only 164 U.S. hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
