Forty students from schools across Long Island were honored by their families and leaders of Cohen Children’s Medical Center, part of Northwell Health, for participating in a mental health program called Cohen Strong.
The students, chosen from seven school districts across Long Island -- including Syosset, Great Neck, Island Trees, Freeport and Hauppauge -- were chosen by their teachers because of their dedicated commitment to breaking the stigma attached to mental health disorders and for their leadership and advocacy skills.
The yearlong Cohen Strong program, offered to students in grades 10 to 12, provided training in teen mental health first aid, as well as advocacy, research and leadership skills.
In addition, awards were presented to elementary, middle and high school students for their art projects that tackled the theme of “Erase the Stigma.” This year, the student artists submitted work offering their interpretation of hope. Each winning piece of art will be displayed at one of the hospital’s behavioral health centers.
Students in the program also visited Washington, D.C., and Albany to meet with lawmakers about proposed mental health legislation and share their views on the current needs of young people.
“It’s been an honor and a privilege to work with these dedicated young people,” said Vera Feuer, MD, associate vice president of school mental health at Northwell. “Their passion and creativity and their willingness to share their own experiences with mental health issues, in some cases, is truly inspiring. Everyone involved in this program has learned so much from our student advocates.”
