Walks at Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Staten Island locations advance health care in our communities

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, more than 3,000 people comprising patients, families and employees came together across five Northwell Health Walk locations on May 22. Raising more than $968,000, community members stepped up to support women and children’s health, emergency services, cancer treatment and stroke care at Northwell Health hospitals in their respective communities.

Locations for the 2022 Walk included: Jones Beach, Port Jefferson, Riverhead, Westchester and Staten Island.

“The Northwell Health Walk brings together thousands of community members whose support helps us advance care for the patients we serve,” said Brian Lally, senior vice president and chief development officer for Northwell Health. “The Walk started over 10 years ago as the ‘Every Woman Matters Walk,’ inspired by the vision of philanthropists Iris and Saul Katz, whose unending commitment to high-quality health care is felt throughout Northwell.”

Mineola girl born with diaphragm hernia inspires at Jones Beach

Also participating in the Jones Beach walk was 5-year-old Maxxella Fillucco, of Mineola, LI, along with her mother, Vivian Fillucco, and other family members. Maxxella was born at Katz Women’s Hospital at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a hole in the diaphragm that causes a baby’s digestive organs to push into the chest cavity, leaving no room for the lungs to develop. Maxxella was intubated and rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) next door at Cohen Children's Medical Center, where she underwent a successful diaphragm hernia surgery to save her life.

“This walk means everything to us because Maxxella started her life in the NICU at Cohen Children’s,” said Ms. Fillucco. “She received such amazing care and attention, and it’s so important that we’re raising funds to help other babies in the NICU.”

Funds raised will benefit programs, including the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and neonatology services at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

During a routine sonogram, doctors discovered Vivian Sung’s baby had an enlarged gallbladder. She learned that her baby could be born without lungs.

Funds support the communities they serve

Across New York, funds raised at four other walks will support hospitals in their local communities. The Port Jefferson walk supports the Fortunato Breast Cancer Center at Mather Hospital, and the East End/Riverhead walk will help expand emergency services and develop a women’s health program at Peconic Bay Medical Center. Funds raised for Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Hospital support leading-edge treatment for stroke patients, while the Staten Island walk supports the construction of the new Florina Cancer Center at Staten Island University Hospital.

Since its inception, the Northwell Health Walk has raised more than $5 million. Learn more at https://www.northwellhealthwalk.com.
