Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) recently achieved accreditation as a Center of Excellence in minimally invasive gynecology, minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery, recognized for providing the highest quality of care and patient safety by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an independent, internationally recognized patient safety organization. Status as an accredited facility means that SIUH has met nationally and internationally recognized standards.
In addition to the hospital accreditation, Eli Serur, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the hospital received designation from SRC as a Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Surgery; Adi Davidov, MD, associate chair and director of obstetrics and gynecology earned a Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology and Robotic Surgery; and Indraneil Mukherjee, MD, received a Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Minimally invasive surgeries, including robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci surgical system, is an alternative to traditional surgery at SIUH for appropriate patients. Under the guidance of specially trained surgeons like Drs. Serur, Davidov, and Mukherjee, complex surgical procedures can now be performed through small incisions using precise tools, cameras and lights. Minimally invasive surgery is known for its many benefits, including less pain, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries. Last year, the hospital performed 639 minimally invasive gynecology procedures, 1,277 minimally invasive surgeries and 307 robotic surgeries.
"Additionally, with our increasing commitment to robotic surgery we have received and installed an additional robot at the North campus, and have upgraded the da Vinci Xi systems to use their most advanced tools," said Prashant Sinha, MD, chief of surgery at SIUH. "My commitment is to use Northwell’s strategic partnership with leading robotic companies and surgeon leaders to make SIUH a destination for robotic and minimally invasive surgeries."
Health care facilities and surgeons seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. The inspection involves all staff working with the surgeon in the accredited program. Inspectors educate staff on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.
“We’re proud to recognize Staten Island University Hospital for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “These accreditations signal that this facility is among the best in these specialties and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
LIJMC, LIJ Valley Stream and NSUH were among five hospitals nationally to earn elite Joint Commission advanced spine certification.
