South Shore University Hospital completes first robotic heart surgery

The Da Vinci Xi robot, used in the procedure, allows for safer, less invasive surgery

South Shore University Hospital (SSUH) has completed its first robotic heart surgery using the da Vinci Xi robot. Robert Kalimi, MD, chairman of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at SSUH, recently performed a successful minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) on a 61-year-old male patient.

“Performing South Shore University Hospital’s first robotic heart surgery is a groundbreaking achievement that not only elevates our surgical capabilities but also significantly benefits our patients and community,” said Dr. Kalimi. “Our commitment to pioneering such innovations underscores our dedication to providing exceptional care and advancing the future of medicine.”

How does the Da Vinci Xi robot work?

The Da Vinci Xi robot is operated through a console featuring a display and hand controls. The surgeon uses the controls to manipulate each of the robot's four surgical arms and the surgical instruments they hold.

This advanced technology allows for greater precision, reduced recovery times, and minimally invasive procedures, ultimately leading to better outcomes and enhanced quality of life for patients. Robotic heart surgery allows surgeons to access the heart without a sternotomy and allows for the avoidance of using a Heart-Lung Bypass Machine, reducing the risk of stroke. In addition to the MIDCAB procedure, SSUH surgeons will in the future perform robotic mitral valve repairs.

“The completion SSUH’s first robotic heart surgery marks a significant milestone in our mission to provide cutting-edge medical care close to home,” said Irene Macyk, PhD, RN, executive director of SSUH. “By investing in such innovations, we strengthen the bond between our hospital and the community we serve, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care without having to travel far from their homes.”
