Pulmonary medicine
The Division’s pulmonary medicine outpatient services span the full range of lung diseases, whether common or rare. Our faculty serves as a resource for primary care providers for management of common lung problems such as cough, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as for the assessment and treatment of complex and less common pulmonary disorders. In addition to general pulmonary medicine services, the Division is home to specialized centers, including:
- Center for Pulmonary Hypertension and Advanced Lung Disease
- Beth and Jay Thalheim Asthma and Airway Center
- Jack Gorvoy Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Bronchiectasis Center
- Northwell Sleep Disorders Center
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center
- Critical Care Medicine
Our faculty also staffs inpatient pulmonary consultation services at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. They direct novel respiratory care units at both hospitals that provide efficient, high-quality multidisciplinary care for patients with respiratory diseases. Our team also directs and staffs the medical intensive care units at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, as well as at Northwell community hospitals.
Critical care medicine
Nationally and internationally recognized as leading innovators in critical care medicine, the Division’s faculty are pioneering new noninvasive monitoring technologies including critical care ultrasonography and echocardiography. These noninvasive diagnostic modalities have changed the practice of critical care medicine. The Acute Lung Injury and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a regional referral resource that provides advanced respiratory support for critically ill patients with lung injury that does not respond to conventional treatment.
Sleep medicine
The Division’s staff members in sleep medicine are recognized as leaders in this growing field. The Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center is a regional referral resource for the full spectrum of adult and pediatric sleep disorders.
Research and education
Our faculty also advance medical knowledge by conducting a range of clinical research in each subspecialty area, as well as basic research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. Training the next generation of physicians is also an integral part of our mission. The Division sponsors accredited fellowship training programs in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as well as Sleep Medicine. Our team of academic clinicians includes experienced scientists, educators, mentors and leaders with expertise that encompasses the spectrum of adult lung diseases and disorders, critical care and sleep medicine.
