Exercise testing
Our exercise physiologists at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT) can perform research-backed exercise tests to evaluate your athleticism and help you find areas for improvement. We can help design training programs for you using the measured—not estimated—values from this testing. We also offer a combined program with sports nutrition services to enhance your exercise routine.
Aerobic capacity (VO2 max) test
This test is a valuable assessment of your cardiovascular and respiratory fitness. The evaluation uses the Parvo metabolic cart, the system of choice at NASA and U.S. Olympic Training Centers, which is renowned for its accuracy and reliability. Our experienced team has conducted numerous VO2 max tests, catering to elite athletes like world-class runners, gymnasts, basketball players, and professional ice hockey teams.
The test has multiple purposes. It gauges your initial fitness level and tracks improvements as you engage in training. It also provides insights into your anaerobic thresholds and ventilatory thresholds, crucial markers for optimizing your training regimen. These thresholds, otherwise known as your target training zones, indicate the exercise intensity you can sustain comfortably over extended periods.
What to expect
From warming up to post-test consultation, the session takes approximately 60 minutes. The exercise test, on the treadmill or bike, will last for about 10 minutes. The work will be very light to start but will get harder each minute until you feel you cannot go any further. A post-evaluation report will be provided, which will include training guidelines based on your test results and how you compare to others of your age and gender.

Anaerobic power assessment (Wingate test)
The Wingate test determines how much power you have for quick, intense bursts of exercise. Identical to the techniques embraced by elite athletes, this assessment empowers you to gauge your immediate power potential and track improvements over time. By participating in this assessment, you gain valuable insights into your anaerobic capabilities, allowing us to tailor training strategies that align with your training goals.
What to expect
From warming up to post-test consultation, the session takes approximately 45 minutes. The exercise test, which takes place on a stationary bicycle ergometer, lasts for only 30 seconds but is an all-out effort. For this reason, you will be given ample time to warm up prior to the test and cool down following the test. Following the test, you will engage in a post-assessment discussion with our exercise physiology experts to understand the significance of your results.
Mini combination testing (can be customized according to sport)
This is a comprehensive, multi-component assessment of your physical fitness for sports participation. It assesses:
- Aerobic capacity (VO2 max test)
- Anaerobic power (Wingate test)
- Body composition (body fat percentage)
- Lower and/or upper extremity strength assessment (knee, hip, shoulder)
- Triplanar musculoskeletal flexibility assessment (upper extremity, trunk, lower extremity)
- Biomechanical efficiency (vertical jump testing on force plates)
