Microphlebectomy
What is microphlebectomy?
Microphlebectomy, also known as stab phlebectomy, is a minimally invasive method of removing large varicose veins (twisted, swollen veins) through small punctures in the skin. The incisions are no more than one to three millimeters long, avoiding any further cosmetic issues.
Why it's done
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive treatment meant to eliminate superficial varicose veins that are often too large to be treated with sclerotherapy. The procedure is most often performed for cosmetic reasons; however, it is also effective for relieving the symptoms associated with varicose veins, such as swelling or itching.
Our approach
We empathize with the discomfort varicose veins can cause, not only due to the pain they can cause, but also their unsightly appearance. That’s why we work hard to hone in on the best, most viable procedure for your particular condition. Our professionals are highly-skilled in minimally invasive techniques for eliminating varicose veins, such as microphlebectomy. This approach equates to smaller incisions, less pain and scarring and a quicker recovery time for our patients.
Our experts are seasoned in the treatment of a wide range of vascular conditions, performing up to 1,000 procedures ever year. However, that familiarity doesn’t sway our commitment to working toward better, more refined treatment methods. You can count on every surgeon in our ranks to offer the most advanced techniques, not only for microphlebectomy, but for any procedure your treatment may require.
Risk factors
The following factors may put you at risk for developing varicose veins that would warrant this procedure:
- Standing for prolonged periods of time (a common problem for teachers and nurses)
- A family history of varicose veins
- Obesity
- Lack of exercise
Women are also far more likely to develop varicose veins than men, specifically during pregnancy.
What to expect
Our specialists typically begin by administering local anesthesia; we may use general anesthesia if we’re treating a larger area. Once you’re numbed, we will make a series of small incisions to access to the diseased veins, usually creating anywhere from five to 10 incisions. Through these incisions, we carefully pull the damaged vein out of the skin, restoring blood flow.
Recovery
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive treatment option, which means less pain and a quicker recovery time. We perform this procedure on an outpatient basis, and most patients can expect to walk out of our office that same day with just a dressing and a bandage that helps to apply pressure to the incision site. Your surgeon may also have you wear compression stockings for a few days following treatment.
Results
Our surgeons are extremely successful in removing unsightly varicose veins through microphlebectomy, while avoiding any additional complications, such as infection.
Long-term care
Our compassionate, expert care doesn’t end after your procedure is complete. We continue working with you to reduce the risk of additional varicose veins through positive lifestyle changes, such as exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.
